What is queer, caring, masculinity? When it is not asserted, validated, or participating in traditional, relational codes (eg. the ‘two back pat’ hug, misogynistic comments, aggression), what does masculinity look like? Based on her poem of the same name, Laura Houlberg's Sculpture of my Masculinity at Fermentation Closet asked viewers to savor the artist’s deeply private masculinity and its un-assertion. Sugar sculptures of an androgynous face were displayed outside the space, while a short film looped inside. Viewers were asked to choose an object curated by Houlberg, and at the end of the show, participate in the destruction of the sugar sculptures.
